Standing at 3,680 metres above sea level in the remote forests of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Tungnath is the world’s highest Shiva temple — and possibly the most dramatic place of worship in the entire Himalayan range. The trek from Chopta to Tungnath and beyond to the Chandrashila summit (4,090 m) combines deep spiritual significance with one of the most breathtaking mountain panoramas accessible on a moderate trek from Delhi.
At Hill Climbers, the Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila trek is one of our most beloved routes — suitable for first-time trekkers who want genuine altitude, families seeking an adventure combined with cultural depth, and experienced trekkers looking for a shorter but impactful Himalayan experience.
Why Chopta is Called the Mini Switzerland of India
The meadows of Chopta, situated on a high ridge in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, are remarkably open and gentle — a contrast to the dramatic gorge landscapes of much of the surrounding region. In spring, these meadows blaze with rhododendron blossoms in red, pink, and white. In winter, the entire landscape vanishes under snow, and Chopta becomes one of the most accessible snow trek destinations in Uttarakhand.
The title “Mini Switzerland” is earned by the combination of rolling green meadows, panoramic mountain views, and the distinctive Alpine feel of the forest-to-meadow transition that defines the Chopta landscape.
Tungnath: The Spiritual Heart of This Trek
The five Panch Kedar temples of the Garhwal Himalaya represent one of India’s most ancient pilgrimage circuits. Tungnath — dedicated to Lord Shiva’s arms — is the highest of these five. The temple is built in the North Indian Nagara architectural style, with stone walls that have weathered centuries of Himalayan winters. Trekkers from all backgrounds — pilgrims, atheists, foreign adventurers — find something profound in the stillness that surrounds Tungnath at dawn.
Above the temple, the trail to Chandrashila (meaning “Moon Rock”) is a 1.5 km ascent through thinning vegetation to an open summit plateau. On a clear morning, the panorama is staggering: Nanda Devi (7,816 m), Trishul, Kedar Dome, Chaukhamba, and — on the clearest days — the distant tip of Bandarpunch.
The Deoria Tal Option: A Perfect Add-On
Deoria Tal, situated at 2,438 m in the forests below Chopta, is one of Uttarakhand’s most celebrated mirror lakes. On calm mornings, the reflection of the Chaukhamba massif in its still waters is one of the most photographed natural images in the Indian Himalaya. We include an optional morning visit to Deoria Tal on Day 4, making this a complete Garhwal experience.
Seasonal Guide: When to Go
March to April: Rhododendron forests in full bloom — extraordinary colour on the trail to Tungnath. Snow may still be present on upper sections. One of the most beautiful times.
May to June: Clear skies and comfortable temperatures (5°C–18°C). Best for Chandrashila sunrise views. Popular season, so book early.
July to August: Monsoon. Trails become slippery; heavy rainfall; leeches in lower forest sections. Not recommended.
September to November: Our favourite season. Crystal-clear post-monsoon skies, golden-hour light on the Himalayan peaks, and very few crowds. Chandrashila sunrise in October is an unforgettable experience.
December to February: Snow trek season. Tungnath temple is closed, but the trail and Chandrashila summit remain accessible for experienced trekkers. The snow-covered rhododendron forest is magical. Sub-zero temperatures at night; proper gear essential.
