GANGOTRI TOUR

GANGOTRI TOUR

5 Days

Gangotri is one of those rare places where the boundary between the sacred and the sublime dissolves completely. The ancient temple of Goddess Ganga sits on the banks of the Bhagirathi river at 3,415 metres, surrounded by pine forests and granite peaks, with the roar of the river as constant background music.

For devout pilgrims, Gangotri is one of the four dhams of the Uttarakhand Char Dham circuit — a mandatory spiritual destination. For trekkers, it is the gateway to the Gaumukh glacier and Tapovan. For travellers who simply want to experience the raw, powerful beauty of the Uttarkashi Himalaya, Gangotri needs no other justification.

Our 5-day Gangotri tour from Delhi is designed for all of these visitors — pilgrims, trekkers, and travellers — providing a comfortable, culturally rich, and logistically seamless journey to one of Uttarakhand’s most magnificent destinations.

The Bhagirathi Gorge Drive: India’s Most Scenic Road?

The drive from Uttarkashi to Gangotri (105 km) through the Bhagirathi gorge is, in our opinion, one of the most spectacular road journeys in India. The road follows the Bhagirathi river through a series of dramatic gorges — grey granite walls rising hundreds of metres on both sides, the turquoise river crashing over boulders below, occasional waterfalls streaking down the cliff faces.

Stopover villages like Gangnani (with its natural hot springs) and Harsil (famous for its deodar forests, apple orchards, and cinematic beauty — Bollywood has filmed here) add cultural texture to what is already a visually extraordinary drive.

Gangotri Temple: History and Significance

The current Gangotri temple was built in the 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha commander, though the site’s sacred significance dates back to ancient Hindu scripture. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga — the personification of the holy river — and is managed by the Semwal priests of the Gangotri valley.

The Bhagiratha Shila — a natural rock near the temple — is identified in the Ramayana as the place where King Bhagiratha performed penance to bring the Ganga down from heaven to earth. According to the Puranas, Lord Shiva received the Ganga in his matted locks at this spot, releasing her gently to flow as the holiest river in the world.
